“The Cosmo” made a little piece of Irish radio history this week, as the interview with Senator David Norris was featured on the “Playback” programme on RTÉ Radio One.

As the RTÉ website puts it, “Playback is compiled and presented by Ruth Buchanan bringing you nuggets from right across the Radio 1 schedule, from day time chat to night time reflection and memories.

On this week’s programme, however, The Cosmo‘s interview with the Senator proved entertaining enough to be included in the programme, making it the first programme from a digital radio station to be featured on the show. “Playback” has a reputation of being one of the most listened-to radio programmes in Ireland, and for The Cosmo to be included in the broadcast means that RTÉ acknowledge the ever-improving quality of the programme.

The “Playback” programme which features the clip from The Cosmo can be heard by visiting the RTÉ Radio 1 website here.

As this week’s ‘Cosmo’ featured a special interview with Senator David Norris, the National Scene Highlights were not read out on the show. Instead, they are available below.

This week’s The Cosmo is a very special one indeed, as we become a bit more political!

Senator David Norris comes into the RTÉ Pulse studio to chat with Scott De Buitléir about his sense of Irishness, the decriminalisation of homosexuality, the gay scene before the George and Dragon were established and much much more!

David Norris speaking to RTÉ Pulse presenter Scott De Buitléir

Senator Norris discusses life in Ireland before homosexuality was decriminalised in 1993, an event which was brought about through the work of Norris himself and a select number of associates, including former President, Mary Robinson.

“People in the Civil Service thought they could lose their jobs as they possibly could have, because it was still a criminal offence. So I became a visible face and I was very happy to do that.”

“Lesbians were ignored which is even more insulting…At least we as gay men had a target – law reform. ‘We are being unfairly treated, we demand our rights and we will have them established!’ Whereas the women were just regarded as contempt.”

However, politics and crime are not the only topics on the special ‘serving’ of The Cosmo! David Norris lets listeners in on how the gay scene was before the days of The George and Dragon and also talks to Scott about his involvement with the Dublin Gay Theatre Festival and his thoughts on civil marriage in Ireland, including the efforts of activist groups such as LGBT Noise and MarriagEquality.

When talking about how homosexuals are labelled and the use of the word “Queer” Senator Norris said: “Fairy or Puff – that’s fine by me but I am definitely not a Queer and I’m not going to be queer for anybody.”

Wednesday Evenings from 8pm on RTÉ Pulse.

Hey guys and gals, The Cosmo has been doing well so far, but now it’s time to mix things up a bit! 😉

Here at RTÉ Pulse, we’re always looking for new talent to promote, and to give the chance for national and international exposure and media coverage.

Are you a DJ who performs regularly on the gay scene? Do you have a knack for putting a playlist of good dance music together?

The Featured DJ segment of the show currently needs new and well-founded DJs to show off their talents and to compile an hour-long playlist of music to be played out on The Cosmo.

Any further information can be obtained by e-mailing thecosmo@rte.ie.

Scott x

Action group, LGBT Noise, pop into the studio at RTÉ Pulse to chat to Scott about how they’ve been getting on with the fight for full civil marriage for everyone in the Republic of Ireland!

Also, DJ Tonic, who is a resident DJ with Eden Experience, presents a delicious mix of music for the second half of the show.
